I just bought the car from my dad. The pan was dropped about 3,000 miles ago, and the dealer said that there were some metal flakes but not too bad. He doesn't think that I need to drop the pan again so soon and that I could check to see if the transmission fluid was ok myself.
Now, unfortunately, this is my first car, and I'm planning on taking a 2,000 mile road trip from CA to WI on Friday. I need to know if my transmission is going to make it. Or, at least get some assurance that it is likely to make it.
How do you know if the transmission needs to be cleaned? Can I check that myself?
Also, if the transmission does die, would it be worth it to get it replaced? I don't know if the engine is any good, and the dealer said that they don't normally "check engine compression" anymore, which is what my dad suggested I have them check.
How do I know if the engine is any good so that I know whether or not it's worth it to have the transmission replaced in case it dies on me?
I'm doing my research, but I haven't found definitive answers to any of these questions yet.
Do I need to check engine compression to see if my engine is good or is there another way? |
